6 Reasons to have a film on your website

Recently we’ve been making lots of films for finance and legal companies. Yes solicitors, financial advisors and accountants need films too! Some people think that’s a bit odd, and we don’t know why!

Film is a cracking tool for a number of reasons, here are six of the best. Maybe you should print them off and give them to your boss…

  1. Film sells. Did you know that web websites with film content have double the viewing time then websites without? Their conversion rates are also higher, it’s because film can convey lots of information in a little bit of time. Good eh?
  2. Film is accessible. Did you know that there are guidelines in place to ensure websites are accessible to all users? You can see them here www.w3.org . If someone came to your site could they access all the content? Film is a great way of making sure everyone can see or hear what you’re all about.
  3. Film is cost effective. Marketing costs money, and you’ll know that the process of copywriting, design, print and distribution can mount up. At A Star Media we’ll produce, film and edit a piece that can be distributed online, all in one package! Bonus.
  4. Film is environmentally friendly. Let people know all about your business without paper, use film, and distribute it online.
  5. Film puts a face to the name. It might sound silly to those confident types, but striding up to stranger to say hello can be a bit daunting. Having a film shows people how lovely and approachable you are, especially good if you want to blast away stereotypes (ahem.. accountants and solicitors?)
  6. Film is easy to share. Post a link on and e-mail, tweet about it, put it on your homepage, put it on a USB stick, put it on your iPhone, put it on your Blackberry, put it on your laptop… there are so many ways to get your film seen. Unlike paper marketing, you can also track who’s watching your online films, and what that’s doing for your web referrals and conversion rates. Brilliant!

If that’s not wet you’re whistle, check out our website to see a bit more about why film is so good! It’s the future, see you there!

Young Enterprise and Young Business

It’s no easy task to start a business and that’s a fact . It takes enthusiasm, determination and entrepreneurship. It’s not an easy challenge no matter who you are.

So could you have done it when you were 16?

Well that’s exactly what the Young Enterprise Challenge Event has demanded of thousands of students across the UK. Students had to develop a business idea, investigate its viability and then kick-start the money-making over a six month period, whilst continuing their normal studies at the same time!

A Star Media Directors Katrina Atherton and John Starkie were delighted to be asked to judge the competition in the Mansfield area and the East Midlands Finals. Not only was the whole event a lot of fun, students got the opportunity to develop a whole host of employable skills for the future. Win win. The A Star Media team are big believers in young people and developing skills for the future, whether this is by offering work experience placements or delivering skills workshops in schools across Nottinghamshire.

Last night the A Star Media judges, together with other business experts from the region, selected the East Midlands finalists who will now go on to compete in the national finals in London. Pretty impressive for such young people.

5 Reasons why video is great on Facebook

Facebook is great! We bet most people you know use it, and most check it everyday. Love it or hate it Facebook, and all social media is now part of life!

Facebook is HUGE! and we could write all day about how big it is! It’s twice as popular as Google in the workplace (source Netbox) and ranks in the top five websites visited by businesses, with 6.8 % of all traffic (Source Mashable).

1. Video can be shared

That’s the best thing about Social Media, anything you put on can be shared! If a customer sees your Facebook group and watches a video, they can share that video with their friends, spreading the message.

2. People watch video

Watching video is super easy. Click, play, done!  If it’s on your Facebook group people are going to watch it. Whats more, watching video online and on mobile devices is growing all the time. Did you know websites with video have conversion rates way higher than those without? Imagine what that could do for your business.

3. Video saves time

If prospective customers are checking your Facebook group; a video that sums up your product or services in 30 seconds is going to be much more effective than three paragraphs of text. It’s also much more accessible to people with special needs or language barriers.

4.Facebook reaches people (targeted marketing)

Facebook reaches a lot of people. Using video as part of a pro-active marketing campaign can get to the people you want to sell to. What’s more if you have a Facebook group with one hundred followers who chose to join it, that could well be one hundred potential customers converted with a video!

5. Facebook is  better at playing video

It might not seem like the strongest argument but it’s a good one in our books. Facebook’s first video application wasn’t very quick or very good. However that’s all changed! With a surge in 3rd party developers offering free Facebook video uploaders, Facebook upped its game. Their new video application is no YouTube but it does the job offering standard and high quality versions of video!

Cups of tea, cupcakes and the odd sandwich. How the little things can help.

Here at A Star Media HQ we’re a bit new to the big bad world of ‘business’, and we’ve had to learn fast because they don’t take ‘newcomer’ into consideration when it comes to sorting out who cuts the mustard. In fact, it’s even harder for new businesses, because you haven’t had time yet to build up a repertoire and show people how good you really are. What a pickle! You need work to show people that you’re up to standard, but you can’t get work because in the business world you’re only a baby, and while babies are cute would you pay one to make you a film? Probably not!

So, how have we managed to crack the egg from the inside out? Well in short, we haven’t yet. In statistical terms something crazy like two in every three new businesses fail in the first three years, I read somewhere that it was actually nine out of ten. That’s pretty daunting, a bit like how the Spartans didn’t say they’re children were actually born until they were three because infant mortality rates were so high (but the costumes were good we can give them that).

As a new business we’re still in that scary grey zone of ‘second year of trading’, are we going to make it? Hopefully, we’re hitting targets and getting fantastic reviews from our customers, which is prompting more people to use us and increasing business. Excellent!

So how have we done it? Well, we make out of this world films for a start, but there’s also the little things, like providing whopping cups of tea, making homemade cakes and making sure our customers are happy. Simples!

We think it’s a good way to start, and a foundation to build on. Yes, starting a business is risky, but building it on a foundation of muffins might help…

Making your event unforgettable!

Have you ever been to an event that was brilliant, and while you were there you had a fab time, and when you came back you told everyone how great it was, and now you’re thinking about it you can only remember about three things that actually happened, and one of them is how nice the biscuits were?

It’s funny how we don’t always remember everything, and imagine if you hosted a great event and everyone had a really good time, but a few months down the line they can’t remember who gave a presentation, or what they said, and the hand out you gave them has been filed away into the unknown. Why even bother I hear you ask!

Fear not, there is an end to this horror, and it’s an A Star Media solution to many a problem. Film it!

A Star Media can film all sorts of events, from Oscar’s style award ceremonies to training workshops. We’ll edit your event into a great film which can be put onto a DVD, online or your desktop.

But obviously we’d say that, you can film your own event and keep it on file, and it’s something we’d always recommend. Even if you won’t be showing your clients the film, having a permanent record of your event, presentation or workshop allows you to go back and assess what you did, look at what was good and look at what could be improved.
